He was an active member of Bethel AME Church, where he was one of the founding members of the "Blast from the Past" social group. He was predeceased by two brothers, William David and Dr. James Wilbanks; a brother-in-law, George J. Peterson; and two sisters, Lillie Mae and Rachel Rhomaine Wilbanks.
