Robert Merkles dad was a United States attorney who successfully prosecuted the Colombian drug baron Carlos Lehder Rivas, and many other potheads in Florida.
But somehow his dope smoking 32 year old son escaped jail time.
Mr. Merkle was the chief federal prosecutor for the Middle District of Florida from 1982 to 1988, a role in which he won not only a conviction of Mr. Lehder, whom the authorities described as having been responsible for 80 percent of the Colombian cocaine smuggled into the United States, but also an indictment of Gen. Manuel Antonio Noriega, the Panamanian military ruler later captured in the American invasion of his country.
Mr. Merkle was a flamboyant prosecutor, who acquired the nickname Mad Dog for his aggressive style. Critics questioned his methods. Defense lawyers, accusing him of abusive and bullying tactics that they compared to McCarthyism. There were multiple Justice Department investigations of Mr. Merkle for inappropriate conduct.

The owner looks at the TV set, then looks at Merkle, and says, "I don't sell stuff to potheads."
And the owner says, "I told you I don't sell to potheads!" So Merkle leaves again.
He comes back a week later and says, "How much for that TV?"
The owner says, "I'm not going to tell you again, I don't sell to potheads!!!"
Rob Merkle looks back at the owner and says, "How can you tell I'm a pothead?"
The owner looks back and says, "Because that's a microwave."
